  • HOW DO THE SAT SUBJECT TESTS (SAT II) DIFFER FROM THE SAT 1?

The SAT is largely a test of verbal and math skills. True, you need to know some vocabulary and some formulas for the SAT; but it’s designed to measure how well you read and think rather than how much you remember. The SAT subject tests (SAT II) are very different. They’re designed to measure what you know about specific disciplines. Sure, critical reading and thinking skills play a part on these tests, but their main purpose is to determine exactly what you know about math, history, chemistry, and so on.

THE NEW SAT (SAT 1). WHAT DOES IT TEST?

Just because the SAT features math and reading problems, it does not mean that the test reflects what you learned in school. You can ace calculus or fancy yourself as the next William Faulkner, and still struggle with the SAT. The test writers claim that the test measures “reasoning ability,” but actually, all the SAT measures is how well you take the SAT. It is most definitely not an intelligence test or an indicator of how good of a person you are.

Chances are you know someone who know someone who knows someone who scored a perfect or near perfect score on the SAT without getting tutored. Yep, this friend-of-a-friend just walked into the test center and got a great score and now she’s on her way to Harvard with a full scholarship. Hey, it could happen. But it’s not a wise plan.

Would you show up at a basketball game or swim meet if you’d missed every practice? Would you perform at a piano recital unprepared? Maybe you would consider it if you were a phenomenal athlete or a virtuoso-though even Michael Jordan and Mozart practiced. Yet thousands of students take the SAT each year without sufficient practice.

The SAT is a skill, and like any skill, it can be mastered. Unfortunately, many students assume that the SAT tests the same things as math or English class. However, this is not the case.

WHAT IS THE SAT SUBJECT TEST (SAT II)?

Known until 1994 as the College Board Achievement Tests, the SAT subject tests are actually a set of more than 20 different subject tests. These tests are designed to measure what you have learned in such subjects as Literature, Biology and Chemistry. Each test lasts one hour and consists entirely of multiple choice questions. On any one test date in Nigeria, you can take one, two or three subject tests.

HOW DO COLLEGES USE THE SAT TESTS?

Many people will tell you that the SAT measure only your ability to perform on standardized exams-that they measure neither your reading and thinking skills nor your level of knowledge. Maybe they’re right. But these people don’t work for colleges. Those schools that require SATs feel that they are an important indicator of your ability to succeed in college. Specifically, they use your scores in one or both ways: to help them make admissions and/ or placement decisions.
